I’ve been having a spot of bother recently which has prompted this article. For several years now I have been sending my books out to a bookkeeping service. The reason for this is that I am very bad at record keeping and I have a tendency to leave mundane chores like this to the last minute preferring instead to collect everything into a manilla folder and store it, hidden in the bottom drawer of the filling cabinet, along with those letters from insurance companies explaining my responsibilities with respect to work place safety and superannuation contributions.
The system has worked extremely well up until now. Every three months I dust of the folder and deliver it to the bookkeeper before promptly forgetting all about it for another three months. Using this method I have managed to State my quarterly Business Activity on time, managed to pay my installments to the ATO within a reasonable time and I have had my end of year accounts prepared for the accountant before my wife needed to give me that well practiced look of exasperation.
